Napoleon’s invasion of Russia in 1812 was one of the most disastrous military campaigns in European history. Beginning in June 1812, the French Grande Armée crossed the Neman River and advanced deep into the Russian Empire in an attempt to force Tsar Alexander I to return to Napoleon’s Continental System. Russian armies initially withdrew, avoiding a decisive confrontation while leaving devastated territory behind them. The campaign’s largest battle came at Borodino on 7 September, where Napoleon defeated neither the Russian army nor its determination to continue the war. Napoleon subsequently entered Moscow, only to find the city largely abandoned and eventually engulfed by fire. With no peace agreement forthcoming and winter approaching, the Grande Armée began its catastrophic retreat. Battles at Maloyaroslavets, Krasnoi, and the Berezina compounded the disaster, while hunger, disease, exhaustion, and extreme weather devastated the army. The Russian Campaign of 1812 permanently weakened Napoleon’s military power and accelerated the collapse of his European empire.
