The Falklands War was a short but intense conflict fought in 1982 between the United Kingdom and Argentina over the disputed Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic. Argentina invaded the islands on April 2, prompting Britain to send a large naval task force more than 8,000 miles to retake them. The campaign featured carrier-based Sea Harrier fighters, Royal Navy warships, submarines, amphibious landings, and fierce ground combat involving British and Argentine forces. British troops landed at San Carlos Water in May and fought a series of battles across East Falkland, eventually advancing on Stanley, the islands’ capital. Argentine forces surrendered on June 14, 1982, after 74 days of fighting. The war cost the lives of 255 British military personnel and 649 Argentines, along with three Falkland Islanders. The conflict remains an important episode in British and Argentine history and continues to shape the political dispute over sovereignty of the islands.
