The Peninsular War was one of the longest and most costly conflicts of the Napoleonic Wars, fought across Spain and Portugal from 1807 to 1814. It began with the French invasion of the Iberian Peninsula and developed into a complex struggle involving Napoleon’s France, Spanish and Portuguese forces, British troops, and widespread guerrilla resistance. The campaign included major battles such as Vimeiro, Talavera, Salamanca, Burgos, Vitoria, and the sieges of Zaragoza and Badajoz. British commander Arthur Wellesley, later the Duke of Wellington, gradually built an effective allied army and pushed French forces out of the peninsula. The war tied down large numbers of French troops and became a major drain on Napoleon’s military resources. The Peninsular War also played an important role in the weakening of French power before Napoleon’s defeat in 1814. Its battles, commanders, sieges, guerrilla warfare, and shifting alliances remain central to the history of the Napoleonic Wars.
