The Iliad is one of the foundational works of ancient Greek literature and one of the most influential epic poems in Western culture. Traditionally attributed to Homer, it tells part of the story of the Trojan War, focusing particularly on the anger of Achilles and the conflicts among the Greek and Trojan forces. The poem combines heroic warfare, mythology, personal rivalries, honor, fate, and the intervention of the gods. The story features some of the best-known figures from Greek mythology, including Achilles, Hector, Agamemnon, Priam, Paris, Helen, Odysseus, and Patroclus, alongside powerful Olympian gods who influence events on both sides of the conflict. Rather than recounting the entire Trojan War, the Iliad concentrates on events during its final year and explores the consequences of pride, anger, loyalty, loss, and the pursuit of glory.
